It’s all in the name and quality.Piaggio have been making scooters a long time.
marketing and they sell i would look at the yamaha products first
it believed to be of better quality.
its all down to quality….
Because its made in Italy and they regard it as the Ferrari of scooters. The one made in India, called Bajaj, looks the same, rides the same and its much2 cheaper. Why? coz its made in india!! Like the british bike, Royal Enfield..cost a truckload of $ in London. The same one made in India could buy you another 3 bikes.I aint Indian but i know.I hv 4 bikes- a goldwing,a vmax 2 scooters and a dirtbike.
Vespa markets an image and people are willing to more to get it. Why do people pay for a Harley than a metric cruiser….same thing.
It’s made in Italy, so the labor is more expensive. It also has an all-metal body, vs plastic bodywork on all the japanese scoots, so parts are more expensive. And lastly, as Ali notes, you’re paying for the cachet of the Vespa name.
Vespas hold their value, but other scooter companies are very reliable also. It just depends on what you want a scooter for.
You might as well ask why a Lexus is more than a Toyota or why Mercedes cost so much.
I know people who own less expensive scooters, some of them very good ones, who get a close look at the Vespa and suddenly go, “Oh, I get it.” The quality, fit and finish are pretty much unparalleled. Is it the most economic scooter out there? No. But it’s clearly a “luxury vehicle.” Materials alone (steel body) make up a chunk of that price difference.
I own a Vespa LX 150 and a Genuine Buddy 125 (aka PGO Ligero or Metro or BuBu depending on where you live) and both are great scooters, totally reliable and dependable. I also am in a riding group with about 300 members. Side by side, nothing compares with the Vespa in terms of fit and finish.
BTW, Bajaj in India no longer makes scooters and never made anything like the LX 150. They made Vespa P-series and some other clones. The quality of these is pretty good, but still nowhere near that of a Vespa PX. The LML Star (also made in India, sold in the US as the Genuine Stella) is much closer in appearance and quality.
The Star/Stella is the last of the metal, Vespa-style manual transmission scooters. The only other manual sold in the US is the SYM Symba 110, which is a Honda Supercub clone.
If you want Vespa quality at a lower price, consider the LXS, the Piaggio Fly or one of the Aprilia models. Also, Vespa currently has some good deals going and many dealers are selling at their cost to clear space for 2010s. If you want to buy a new Vespa, there will probably never be a better time than right now.
i own a japanesse and is very good, but after 1k miles i have to change the exahust, and tide some nuts… i love a vespa they are realy good and i think the price worth… my next scooter will be a vespa lx 150 or vespa S 150… yeahhh with a 190cc mallosi piston
