Darwin is a very seasonal place so it depends what work you are looking at.
Charles Darwin Uni is in the northern suburbs close to Alawa, Nakara, Casuarina, Wagaman and many other suburbs. Have a look at Google map.
Darwin does not have heavy traffic and is relatively compact – there is a bus terminal in the city and at Casuarina.
Rentals in Darwin are quite expensive – check out the rental tab on realestate.com.au – city and close suburbs are more expensive than near the Uni.
You can buy cheaper vehicles off backpackers who have used them to travel around the country before heading back home overseas.
