Learn to ride dirt bikes first. Take some spills on forgiving dirt with out traffic. Concrete eats through all but good leather and kevlar. Road rash takes a while to heal. Most places have clubs. 4 wheelers are not the same and the balance is almost opposite. I have one bike with a side car and it is similar to a 4 wheeler in handling but no 2 wheel cycle preforms that way. You will first need a drivers license then a cycle endorsement. Learn the road in a car first. On a bike, every driver is a potential coffin nail. Usually it is not you making a mistake but the driver of a car. I have plenty of scars and broken bones to prove that. Get a light dual sport bike to transition to the street first. The sport bikes and cruisers are not easy to throw quickly from turn to turn until you master the power bands, gearing, throttle, and which brake to use. In a car you can panic and hit the break in a turn if you are going to fast. Do that on a bike and you will go vertical, not make the turn, or lay it down.
Any of the small Japanese bikes are affordable to start with.
Do you want good or do you want cheap? There’s inexpensive bikes out there that are good, but no cheap ones that are. Look for an 8-10 year old 250-600cc bike to start with. Don’t get sucked into buying a new 250 ’cause you’ll outgrow it in no time and then you’re stuck with it. Find a good quality used bike that you can afford and then when you drop it, and you will drop it, it’s not so bad ’cause it’s not new. And when you’re ready to move up to your next one, you may even be able to sell the one you have for close to what you paid for it. Whatever you decide to do, before you buy anything take the MSF course offered in your area. What you will learn there is invaluable and will help keep you alive on the street. Good luck and have fun.
buy a cheap dirt bike and ride it for a year or two and gain some experience. i like suzuki bikes. i have a dr200se, which is a dual purpose, so good for city and off road riding. for dual sport highway riding i would go with a dr650.
Motorcycle insurance can be very expensive!
I would suggest picking out a bike you like and checking on insurance well before you buy.
Some insurance companies will give a rebate if you take an approved course. This will give you a break on insurance and will give you some riding experience.(before you hit the road)
They will teach you defencive driving, and how handle the bike.
Look at the sport touring models they are generally cheaper to insure.
You will pay more for the first year of rinding(insurance) and will usually go down the second year, providing you did not get any tickets.
I know you probably would like a larger bike to rip it up now and again, but the smaller the cc will also be a factor in insurance $.
