So I’ve got an old ‘79 Honda CX500 Custom. Great bike, paid for, high MPG, cheap insurance. I commute to school, about a 50 mile round trip, about half of that on the freeway 3-4 times per week. The flow of traffic is 70-85 mph, about 7k-9k rpm on the bike (they only come with 5 gears) It seems to me that this isn’t a good thing for it. Anyone else agree? I’m thinking about getting something that’s happier with going these speeds (and has more punch when I need to pass, ect.) That and the damn wind is annoying at anything above 75. Thoughts?
Thanks for your input guys. The look of the aftermarket windshield just doesn’t look right to me really.
I’d like to add- the redline is at 9500 and the speedometer goes to 80. :-p
Ninebad- Yeah they say these things top out at about 100, so at 85 I’m up there on the RPMs….I’m pretty sure with my weight (175lb+gear+usually a backpack) 95 would be more reasonable. I think a large contributor to this is its 5 speed box.
Jet- Yep, it’s a shafty. I think you’re about right- 12 miles or so per stretch at a time won’t kill it. Probably the most reasonable thing to do is slow down :-p I prefer to ride aggressively defensive- slightly faster than the slow of traffic, accelerating through peoples blind spots.
Twould be a shame to get rid of it though- I might just give it to my father to putt around town on- He loves the thing.
All good answers, I’ll let you guys vote.
