Motorcycle liability only is cheaper than car liability only. Motorcycle medical coverage is more expensive. A LOT more expensive.
It’s going to depend wildly on the cc’s of the bike, and if you need "full coverage" or not.
For an old bike, minimum coverage only, it would probably cost you less than $1,000 a year. Most companies want at least half down, as the normal layup period is winter, and that’s taken into account in the rates.
first off, don’t get a 250, you will get bored with it within a month. You can ride a bigger bike slow, but you can’t ride a small bike fast and all the bigger bikes blowing you away will get to you after a while, not to mention that as you gain experience, you will want to ride harder. (this is not me advocating you riding in an unsafe way, however). People have this misconception of starting on a small bike to "get used to it." Essentially, they’re throwing away money on their first bike. My first ride was a 750 and lasted me quite a long time.
MC insurance is generally low for liability only. I paid $160 for liability on a Suzuki Katana 750. The killer is in collision and theft, which will be higher for a performance bike and even higher on a Japanese performance bike as they get stolen alot and the fairings on a crotch rocket cost alot to replace. Liability for a Yamaha I wanted was only $200, but adding collision/theft was an EXTRA $1050. Other factors are type of bike (cruiser vs crotch rocket) and the size of the motor. You’ll have to call an experienced agent and tell him/her the type of bike and size of the motor to get an exact estimate.
